Wine.co.za - 2009 FM Wine Business Awards

The 2009 FM Wine Business salutes wider South African Wine Industry

Douglas Green scooped a triple-win for Best On-Trade Business Person, Best Trade Campaign and Best Consumer Campaign at the recent FM Business Awards

Supported by South Africa's leading business publication, the Financial Mail, the Awards bring together a panel of independent, international and local industry experts in finance, retail, marketing and advertising, brand building, packaging and design as well as logistics and distribution, to review the entries in fifteen different categories.

Their implementations of consumer incentives, eye-catching point-of-sale displays and excellent logistic support have made Douglas Green attractive not only to consumers, but also to retailers.

Retail giant Makro was chosen as Retailer of the Year for the second year running. Makro has an impressive wine range, stocking 1,500 individual wines from Autumn Harvest Crackling and Namaqua to Rust & Vrede 1694 and Dom Perignon. Double winner from last year, Kleine Zalze, remained in the winner's circle by retaining the Export Star Award.

The Vineyard Connection convinced judges that their business was worthy of the Independent Retailer of the Year Award. Stocking over 500 labels, they pride themselves on easy drinking, good value wines, new discoveries and John Platter 5-Star winners.

Meridian Wine Merchants were new entrants this year and walked off with both the prestigious Wine Company of the Year and the Best Logistics Award. Golden Kaan, one of KWV's leading wine brands, won the Best Launch category for their use of a variety of tools from PR, events, advertising and marketing to in-depth consumer research, unique design and packaging, sophisticated supply-chain management and substantial global retailer/on-trade listings.

Madame May Elaine de Lencquesaing, former chatelaine of Bordeaux 'Super Second' and Decanter Woman of the Year in 1994 (among many other honours), was named Wine Personality of the Year. Robert Jorgensen, from La Vigne, received the honoree Brand Manger Award. It took him three years to come up with the branding idea, "Making Musical Wines", a concept using classical music to mature wines. Entrepreneur and winemaker, Elmari Swart, was crowned Young Achiever of the Year.

Producing an exclusive 1,200 bottles of first-class wine annually, all her vintages have been awarded 4-stars in the local John Platter Wine Guide. In the Design & Packaging category, Graceland Vineyards made quite an impression with its use of understated glamour to give packaging a colourful and slick visual appeal. The Winery of Good Hope achieved the honours again for the Sustainable BEE Deal of the Year for their Good Hope's Land of Hope Trust initiative.

They impressed the judges with their objective of giving each and every employees' children and dependents a first class education. According to co-convener Delarey Brugman (entrepreneur, phylantropist & Founder of Alluvia Specialist Winery & The Wine Specialist Franchise)they "consider it a privilege to recognize these prestigious achievements, which I believe will inspire all creative and ambitious minds within our beautiful world of wine to the benefit of the industry. Congratulations to each deserved Pioneer of their fine business acumen".
