Wine times - Alluvia Vin de Paille

You don’t have to visit the Jura region in France if you want to experience Vin de Paille or in layman’s terms a Straw wine. Alluvia will be bottling their own Vin de Paille in a few weeks time and best you make a note and try to get your hands on some. Rumour has it that it’s going to sell out before the fall of the first winter rain.

The wine is made from viogier grapes which are laid out on straw mats to allow the water to evaporate until the grapes are very, very close to raisins.  Once most of the water has evaporated from the grapes they are left with a very high balling (35-40) and then crushed, pressed and fermented to produce this beautiful dessert wine.

It’s also interesting to note that the alcohol levels in the wine are relatively low at 11,5%, given the high baling readings. The wine spent 12 months in 2nd fill barrels from Chateaux Yquem and only 2 barrels have been produced.
