Weekend Argus - Alluvia launches tasting room and “Give me a Chance” wine
Alluvia Boutique Winery and Guest House in the majestic Banhoek valley provides the perfect backdrop for wine lovers to enjoy a complete wine experience that encompasses every aspect of this boutique winery and is meticulously crafted wines.
At Alluvia, unique wine-growing traditions combine with the breathtaking scenic beauty of the valley to create an exclusive hide away.
Except for its award winning ilka wines, Alluvia also offers a range of refined country suites, including a romantic honeymoon suite, as well as a comfortable self-catering suites – all secluded with spectacular views. Guests can enjoy mountain bike rides, vineyard walks, hit a couple of golf balls at the PGA golf green with sand bunker and three T-boxes or enjoy fly-fishing facilities.
When 30-something proprietor Delarey Brugman and his wife Sandie bought the property in 2002, they had set their sights on producing a spectacular wine and creating a nurturing environment for their children.
The farm was renamed Alluvia as a tribute to unique alluvial deposits found on the estate. The deposit is due to a natural process that occurred over centuries, and the rare combination with the endemic granite and Table Mountain sandstone has resulted in an ideal terroir for the producti0on of world- class red wines.
Little did they know that within four years, the birth of twin daughters Ilse and Karla and the plight of the local community would lead them to establishing a trust fund to enrich the lives of local children.
Brugman started the “Give me a Chance” trust fund in October 2004 in an effort to make a tangible contribution in the future of a community, that can, hopefully, in years to come, look back at this project as the turning point in their lives.
“Research has shown that the development of a child from underprivileged status into a commercially active individual results in the betterment of at least 12 other people from his or her community,” says Brugman.
“People do not exist in isolation from their communities, which is why we decide to support the Kylemore community in the Banhoek valley where we live. Although Kylemore has some of the poorest communities in our country, it is also home to a talented group of learners who dare to dream and are willing to work hard at achieving their goals.
“The Give me a Chance trust works to help these children realise their dreams by raising funds for scholarship programmes, as well as establishing a network of strong role models to mentor them.”
The trust hosts an annual charity fund-raising event in aid of the children. “We want to help these children to become well rounded individuals and, through the contributions of local golfers, wineries and private businesses, a world of opportunity has opened to these youngsters. Not only do they receive the necessary support to achieve on academic and sport levels, but they also have the chance to fulfill previously unreachable dreams.” Brugman recently launched a limited edition 20005 cabernet sauvignon under the “Give me a Chance” label to further a financial boost for the trust. All proceeds generated by the sale of this vintage will be donated to the trust.
According to Brugman, the success of ilka Cabernet Sauvignon can be ascribed to a combination of the fertile alluvial deposit of the unique soil types on the wine estate, good viticultural practices and winemaking team’s explorations of this noble variety.
“We constantly challenge the boundaries of the traditional winemaking styles and I believe Ilka has managed a balanced elegance that is simply out of this world,“ says Brugman.
