Eikestad Nuus - No end to this Delarey

I have always been of the opinion that the Banhoek valley is one of the most beautiful areas in Stellenbosch.

The opinion has just been re-enforced. A visit to Alluvia Wine Estate, tucked away high in the mountains in the Helshoogte Pass, reminds one of the privilege we have of living amongst vineyards and mountains.

Delarey and Sandie Brugman moved to Stellenbosch in 2002, after “taking stock” of their lives in Johannesburg. They realized that their objectives could be reached through a wine farm in Stellenbosch.

These objectives being the establishment of a brand that their children and South Africa can be proud of, and doing it with integrity and conviction.

After a lengthy search for the perfect spot for them, they decided on a 4ha farm next to Tokara. Delarey decided to call the farm Alluvia, in honour of all the alluvial movements responsible for the special soils on the farm, a combination of sandstone and granite.

The wines at Alluvia are called ILKA – after Delarey and Sandie’s twin girls, Ilse and Karla. Delarey is currently working on a wine to be named Lisa, after their new baby sister. The current  ILKA wines include a sauvignon blanc and a cabernet sauvignon, selling at R85 and R135 respectively.

Alluvia also offer five-star accommodation to visitors to Stellenbosch. The five units for accommodation were named after the type of soils that are found on the farm – Clovelly, Hutton, Oakleaf, Tukulu and Avalon. These five-star units were all decorated in the natural earth colours of their respective soil types.

A range of activities are offered to the guests, including fly-fishing, picnics, hiking, golf, scenic flights and a spa.

The Brugmans have also started a new initiative in the Kylemore area. They are helping children to liveb their dreams, by sponsoring their school fees, books, sports gear and other needs. They have called it “Give Me a Chance Trust Fund”. More information is available on their website, www.alluvia.co.za.

This young couple has a lot to offer, and they are full of energy and plans for the future. Be sure to pay them a visit, and watch this place for very interesting new adventures from Alluvia.
