Wineland - Clubs out for CharityThe second "Give me a chance" golf day hosted at the Stellenbosch Golf Club recently, raised an impressive R125 000 in aid of the Kylemore youth. Funds accrued from this event go directly towards the children of Kylemore for school fees, books, clothing, sport gear and, if available, even pocket money. The project was initiated by Delarey Brugman, owner of Alluvia Wine Estate, and the inaugural event raised a remarkable R100 000 for the “Give me a chance” trust in 2005. A portion of the proceeds was used to establish a bursary fund for promising learners, while the rest of the funds were used to give a group of nine learners from Kylemore Secondary school the chance to participate in a variety of sports with the right equipment and clothing. New text books were also purchased to ensure that the learners improve their academic standards. “People do not exist in isolation from their communities, which is why my wife, Sandie and I decided to support the Kylemore community in the Banhoek Valley where we live. Although Kylemore has some of the poorest communities in our country, it is also home to a talented group of learners who dare to dream and are willing to work hard at achieving their goals. The “Give Me a Chance Trust” works to help these children realise their dreams by raising funds for scholarship programmes as well as establishing a network of strong role models to mentor these children.” Brugman applauded the ongoing support by local golfers, wineries and private businesses, which saw a total of 24 four-ball teams taking to the field. The participants were in a particularly generous mood during the post-event charity auction. Brugman’s siblings Sune and Derek also supported this worthy cause with a R10 000 donation from his sister and his brother donating the on-course betting proceeds from Striking Odds to the value of R10 000. Stephan Burger of Integer Credit donated a further R16 000, while Barries Ferreira, a chartered accountant from Plettenberg Bay, has pledged an annual donation of R10 000. Local businessman Derick Lord of Alyd Air made an unselfish three-way contribution. He donated two scenic flights for two couples including a 4x4 trip and braai on a large float, which raised R6 000 at the auction. Lord also bought a commemorative Springbok jersey for R11 000 at the auction. However, his most appreciated contribution was his offer to take the nine students on a scenic flight over the Cape Peninsula as none of them has ever been airborne before. According to Brugman, this is exactly what they are trying to achieve with this initiative. “We want to help these kids to become well-rounded individuals and through the contributions of these benefactors a world of opportunity has opened to these youngsters. Not only do they receive the necessary support to achieve on academic and sport levels, but they also have the chance to fulfill previously unreachable dreams.”
